William Shakespeare is an England born poet and play writer. Shakespeare was born in 1564 in a town called Stratford-upon-Avon, north of London. Shakespeare had seven siblings, and all were educated at the local grammar school. In 1582 at the age of 18, he married Anne Hathaway who was 26. They soon had daughter called Susanna and twins named Hamnet and Judith. His son Hamnet died at the age of 11.
During his career, Shakespeare Introduced 3000 words to the English language. He wrote 37 plays and 154 works that we know of. Shakespeare has been regarded as the “Greatest dramatist of all time”. Shakespeare was so popular as he attracted and held the audience’s attention. This was not an easy task in the Elizabethan era due to the wide social structure, meaning that the wealthy wanted sophisticated drama whilst the poorer citizens wanted blood, humour and gore. Shakespeare had a clear understanding of human nature that related to all human beings. He wrote one in ten of the most quoted lines ever written in the English language. Shakespeare would often perform for Queen Elizabeth 1, until her death in 1603. After the queens death, Shakespeare moved into the interested of the new King, King James the first, from this he wrote Macbeth and other plays. Shakespeare built the Globe theatre, to which was destroyed by war and then rebuilt across the river. The globe theatre was an open air theatre, which allowed 1,500 people from all social classes to watch his plays. His first play performed at the Globe Theatre was Julius Caesar. Shakespeare retired in 1613 and lived with his wife until he died at the age of 52 in 1616. Shakespeare was and will continue to be the greatest writer in mankind. |
