Background Information
William Shakespeare ‘Macbeth’ is a play written and based on true events in the Scottish and English history. Macbeth was written in 1606 under the reign of the new King, King James the first. The play is set in Elizabethan Scotland.The play’s common theme is about greed and how ‘The great chain of being’ should never be broken. The great chain of being is the belief that the social structure should not be altered and everyone should remain where they were ‘born’ on the structural ladder. Macbeth is a tragic hero who explores the feelings of guilt and the transformation into an inhuman being. Macbeth was a real historical figure in the eleventh century.
